Valuing care: a lecture and workshop on textile mending

An interactive lecture on textile repair, framed within the contexts of community care and invisible labour, co-hosted with PhD candidate Ren Ewart at the Piet Zwart Institute, Willem de Kooning Academy.

To facilitate an embodied understanding of the effort required for material maintenance, I designed and made ceramic darning looms for the participants. Instead of just listening, the participants were actively weaving while we gave the lecture. This participatory research allowed them to physically mend while we discussed its broader socio-ecological implications. We explored how the value of maintaining everyday objects directly translates to maintenance in society and how taking the time to repair our belongings is connected to caring for each other and actively building community.
